After personally hunting down and eating at 100+ restaurants in Seoul, amassing 600GB of photos and video footage, gaining 5kgs of weight, and waiting almost 2.5 years, our food guidebook <一起觅食吧 首尔> is finally published in China!!!!!
Those of you who have been reading my updates on “Seoul Food Book Project” since 2013 may know that what a LONG and challenging journey it has been to publish a book in China! This is a quick summary of the last 2.5 years 🙂
Update 1 Let’s write a food guide book! (June 5th, 2014)
After spending a month taking a pastry class in Seoul, decided to write a food guidebook with my foodie friend in crime (Kayla Fan) who happened to visit me in Seoul at the time.
Update 3 Mission Impossible: Become Famous (August 12th, 2014)
We found an agent (China Copyright Protection Center) to represent us but they gave us an impossible homework – to write 3 books OR become famous! (we chose the latter, and started posting our first video)
Update 4 Pleasant Surprise (March 8th, 2015)
6 months after posting 15 of our Food Hunting videos, we had a few pleasant surprises including getting signed by a prominent publisher in China 🙂
August 28th, 2016 – I’m happy to announce that after personally hunting down and eating at 100+ restaurants in Seoul back in 2014 with no sponsors nor advertisement, amassing 600GB of photos and video footage, gaining 5kgs of weight then getting back to my normal weight, and waiting almost 2.5 years, our food guidebook <一起觅食吧 首尔> is finally published in China!!
I flew back to Beijing to attend our book’s launch event held at Korean Cultural Center in Beijing. For this special occasion, we invited publishing industry insiders, several media outlets and few of our good friends. For those of you who know me personally know that I have fear of public speaking and stage fright… although it was relatively a small event, I secretly bought a tiny bottle of erguotou and took a small shot to calm myself down (the exact same 25 cent bottle I used to take shot from whenever I had Chinese oral presentation while studying Chinese many years ago).
After the initial introduction and watching our behind story video, however, that fear of stage actually turned into joy as we presented our book – our baby! I guess the past 2.5 years of practice giving book presentation at various events (Apple shop, Beijing International Book Fair, Baidu office…etc) prepared me for this moment and gave me the confidence I needed. My co-author Fanfan on the other hand loves to talk so speaking in front of crowd came very natural to her. By the 2nd and 3rd interview with Sina Book Forum, I no longer feared, instead was hungry to present the book to more and more people. 😛
Autographing the first 100 books sold with Kayla, our hands were on fire! for those brief 30 minutes, we were walking on cloud 9, we felt like celebrities…haha
Thank you to all our friends and musichef.com readers who supported our project 真的感谢每一个朋友和音乐厨师布洛克的读者们 ：）
celebratory lunch with our agency & publisher 🙂 特别感谢给我们这次机会！
So this is what it feels to work hard towards your dream and actually achieve it -holding my own book in my hands (another bucket list checked off!) and being able to share our finished product with the world, what a wonderful wonderful feeling!! I hope this book will help you next time you go Food Hunting in Korea! 🙂
