Hello, long time no see! As some of you might know, I’ve been working very hard on a book project since April. Here are some updates from the project 🙂

The project is – Seoul restaurant guidebook where my friend Kayla (TV script writer in Beijing) and I recommend the best and hippest Korean restaurants in Seoul to Chinese tourists. I’m not sure if you know but due to the booming economy in China plus the popularity of K-drama series over the past few years as well as special packaged tours like ‘plastic surgery tour’ and the easiness of applying for a driver’s license in Korea, Chinese tourists now make up more than a third of all the foreign visitors to Korea. The number of Chinese tourists to Korea went from 450,000 in 2004 to 3.92 million in 2013!!

별에서온그대 It’s not the first time K-drama successfully entered the Chinese market but this year’s Korean drama (별에서온 그대 /来自星星的你)became the hottest issue in China early this year. It was so popular that all the clothes and accessories worn by the main actress were sold out within days of airing, and the food that they ate in the TV series caused the Chicken & Beer syndrome all over China! I’m not kidding! I saw the sales of Korean fried chicken more than quadruple in some parts of Beijing! nw book update -19

Well, that’s when it hit me – since Kayla and I have been documenting restaurants as a hobby, why not make a restaurant guidebook for Seoul? Timing sure can not be better! Since then, we have researched and analyzed over 15+ Seoul travel guidebooks, food blogs in three languages (Korean, Chinese, English) as well as restaurants recommended to me by my foodie friends and chefs in Seoul. 12368 photos and videos from 2nd trip to Seoul

Out of more than 532 restaurants, in the last four times I visited Seoul this year (once for baking school, once with Kayla for research and twice for my Chinese visa), I managed to eat my way through 104 restaurants and cafés in Seoul! it was very challenging to eat 5-7 times a day. I’m not kidding, I gained 3kg (~6lbs) in the last month alone and broke my all time record – 60kg!! Oh My Garlic….

I gained another kilo after I took this photo… first time I had such a big belly!! my goal of getting a 6-pack abs is so farfetched now… T.T

Since I got back from my 4th trip to Seoul last month with my new Chinese visa, Kayla and I have been very busy writing and editing short travel-documentary style videos. Hopefully in the next two weeks, we will have a demo to show to the publishers in China and Taiwan. In the meantime, here are some snapshots and behind story photos. nw book update1-2-2 nw book update1-16

I will sacrifice my hot food and new clothes to take great food photos!

In retrospect, it was a long and tedious work comparing the reviews for each restaurant in three languages and eating at each of the 104 places in just 4 weeks, however, I consider myself a really lucky guy to be able to follow my dream and passion. Hopefully if all goes well, the publisher will pay for ALL the foods we consumed 😛 nw book update1-9
