One of my dreams is about to come true! 🙂 The past few weeks have been full of surprises, one of which I will share with you now. Click to find out, as my blog is the first place I am announcing this news!
Aside from the weekly “Food Hunting in Seoul” (一起觅食吧） episode on youku.com, I was approached by several friends with possibility of collaborating on various projects. Among them was my restauranteur friend Sean who’s been operating a successful Southeastern restaurant in Beijing for the past few years. I met Sean at Beijing F&B fellowship about two years ago and he has been both a good friend and a mentor to me since. Last year, I also did dessert menu consultation for his restaurant, however, this year we both got very busy and haven’t been in contact.
Just a month ago, he called me to get a direction for a hotel equipment center and briefly mentioned to me that he was planning on opening a small noodle kiosk. I suddenly got curious and inquired about his plan. He went on to explain there is a good food court space that just opened up in one of the malls in Beijing and he was looking for a partner to open a small kiosk there together. That’s when I had the ‘Aha!’ moment…. maybe THIS IS THE RIGHT PARTNER RIGHT OPPORTUNITY that I’ve been waiting for!
Life is very funny sometimes, just like love, good opportunities come to you from most unexpected place and at most unexpected time. What’s more interesting to me is that, these two years in Beijing, I have been searching for the ‘right’ partner but couldn’t find anyone that shared the same vision but when I stopped looking around the best opportunity just found me.
On top of that, this opportunity came to me a month after I politely declined my first-ever restaurant partnership offer from another good friend. The first offer sounded nice (fast seafood restaurant concept) but as much as I wanted to collaborate, something didn’t feel right (maybe the fact that she and her partner did not have any restaurant background and that they were only interested in ‘owning’ a restaurant not ‘operating’ it made me feel uneasy).

If you want to have something you’ve never had before, sometimes you just have to step out of your comfort zone and take a leap of faith. And that’s exactly what I did! I decided to partner up with Sean! Our noodle kiosk will open next month in Parkview Green (芳草地), one of my favorite hangout places. So in the past four weeks, I have been eating just noodle, noodle and more noodle. For a rice lover like me, it was quite a challenge (must have downed 50+ bowls of noodles and as a sideeffect gained more weight…;;) but for opening a noodle shop, this is just a fun little sacrifice.
So many things to get done, so little time…(less than 30 days until opening) but I’m enjoying every moment and every process! I’m writing this post from a hotel room at 1:48am, in just 4 hours, I will be flying out to Korea for a week for a Chinese reality TV show shooting. You might be asking, what?! well I’m just as surprised by this opportunity but I will leave that story for another time, for now, I’m going to catch some sleep. Today Sean and I tasted 4 kinds of noodles, so maybe in my dream tonight I will be swimming around a pool of Laksa noodle.
Cheers to those who are following their dreams! Sweet dreams everyone!
